Bluesky Reaches Record Usage on Election Night

On Tuesday night, Bluesky experienced a notable surge in activity, achieving its highest daily totals for posts, replies, and likes since 2026.

CEO Toni Schneider remarked, “We’re witnessing a significant influx of new users alongside returning familiar faces.”

Schneider reported that both posts and likes saw a twofold increase during the U.S. midterm elections held on Tuesday.

According to COO Rose Wang, site engagement peaked between 8 PM and 10 PM PT, coinciding with the unfolding election results. Compared to the previous month, posts surged by 30%, and likes soared by 70%, while clicks on external links rose by 20%.

Data from open sources indicated that on November 4, Bluesky accumulated 44 million likes, recorded 4.8 million posts, and garnered 2 million new followers. This effort nearly matched the platform’s highest daily record of 45 million likes achieved in November 2024.

The spike in user activity was also evident in Bluesky’s data traffic, which was reported to be 200% higher than usual, reaching 35.8 GB/s.

Often humorously dubbed “Twitter for the left,” Bluesky’s user demographics tend to lean politically left-ward. This trend aligns with a significant increase in users after Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, which likely contributed to the heightened activity during a night marked by the Democratic party’s substantial gains.
