Airbnb Unveils Plans for AI Travel Assistant Set to Debut in Early 2027

Airbnb has revealed plans to introduce its own AI travel assistant, with a scheduled launch in the first half of 2027. The company shared details on the new feature during its Q3 earnings announcement, outlining its functionality and how it differs from conventional AI chatbots.

In previous discussions, CEO Brian Chesky outlined the company’s vision for AI, emphasizing the creation of an advanced travel assistant that offers a more engaging interface than typical chatbots. He highlighted that traditional chatbots might not capture the joy of travel planning, which many people cherish. Chesky mentioned that any AI developed by Airbnb should enhance the excitement of researching and preparing for a trip.

Reiterating these sentiments during the earnings call, Chesky emphasized that travelers will not rely on a singular AI assistant for all their needs. He noted that existing AI agents excel at straightforward tasks, such as making restaurant reservations, but that trip planning necessitates a different approach. “Travel is something people aspire to. The process of exploring destinations and accommodations is integral to the journey. Research shows that 80% of travelers enjoy the planning phase. They want to compare options and see images while discussing plans with their companions,” he remarked. “That’s why we believe our custom AI agent will be better suited for this purpose.”

Airbnb’s upcoming assistant is designed to provide a tailored travel-focused interface that adapts to a user’s inquiries, moving beyond the text-heavy responses typical of chatbots.

“We are creating a unique AI-driven experience that aligns with guests’ needs,” Chesky explained. “Rather than depending solely on chat-based text interaction, which isn’t ideal for planning travel, our assistant will utilize a collection of travel-specific components—such as maps, images, comparisons, and itineraries—to provide real-time, relevant information.”

According to Chesky, the assistant will resemble “generative UI,” offering the appropriate interface whenever it’s needed for specific travel requirements.

In its shareholder communication, Airbnb emphasized how nearly two decades of experience in connecting hosts and guests informs the assistant’s development, ensuring it accommodates insights into both booking and hosting on the platform. Moreover, the assistant aims to assist travelers throughout their journey, handling tasks like modifying reservations, resolving payment issues, and providing safety support, which may be challenging for external agents to offer.

Looking ahead, Airbnb aims for the assistant to assist with various travel aspects, including lodging, services, and experiences—areas the company has increasingly emphasized since its redesign last year.

Originally, Airbnb had anticipated the AI agent’s release within a year, but it has now committed to launching the technology in the first half of 2027.

This announcement coincided with strong financial performance in the third quarter, reporting a revenue increase of 19% to $4.87 billion, surpassing Wall Street expectations. The company also raised its revenue growth forecast for 2026, now predicting growth in the high teens instead of mid-teens.

“Airbnb is re-entering growth mode,” Chesky stated during the Q3 earnings call. “It’s uncommon for a marketplace of our size to see a renewal in growth, but that’s precisely what is happening. The third quarter marked our fastest revenue growth in over three years,” he added.
