Laytr’s Innovative App: Save Anything You Discover Online Beyond Just Articles!

Following the recent closure of the read-it-later service Pocket, various alternatives have emerged, with one notable newcomer being Laytr. This app goes beyond merely saving articles; it allows users to store a variety of content types from the web, including recipes, screenshots, videos, PDFs, bookmarks, and even tabs for future reference.
Laytr automatically categorizes saved content and enables users to organize items into collections termed “cases.” It also features a reminder system, which allows users to set a date for prompts regarding saved items. This could serve as a helpful nudge for users to engage with local events or revisit places they wish to explore, or simply assist in tackling a reading backlog.
One of Laytr’s main features is its commitment to privacy; all saved content is stored privately on the user’s device, granting access only from that device. Consequently, users do not need to create an account, and the app’s developer does not have visibility into what has been saved. Plus, users can access their saved content seamlessly across various Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs via iCloud synchronization.
Laytr was developed by Mostafa Talaat, an indie creator from Ontario, under his company Waitery Inc. Talaat was motivated to create this reading app in light of Pocket’s closure, emphasizing the importance of privacy by designing an app that does not require server storage.
“What you save reflects your personality, and I wanted to ensure it remains with you. Everything is stored on your device and in your iCloud,” Talaat stated. Users can set reminders for when they want to revisit saved content, and the app accommodates imports from existing Pocket accounts, allowing users a smooth transition without losing their previous work.
Due to its focus on privacy, Laytr does not offer features like personalized feeds or AI-driven tagging and summarization of items.

Laytr is available for free with a limit of 30 saved items. For those wishing for unlimited access, a premium subscription is offered at $1.99 monthly, $14.99 annually, or a one-time fee of $39.99 for lifetime access (currently discounted to $24.99 until the end of December). Talaat also indicated plans to incorporate additional languages in future updates.
In the event that a subscription lapses, users will not lose their saved items; however, they will be unable to add new content until they either renew their subscription or reduce their archive to the limit imposed on free accounts. Users can also opt to leave Laytr at any time, as the entire archive is exportable as a ZIP file, complete with readable Markdown and HTML formats for all items, notes, tags, dates, and collections.
