Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery Unite Under the Skydance Banner

Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery will unite under the Skydance banner following the completion of their merger, as announced by Paramount CEO David Ellison on Friday. Skydance is the name of Ellison’s original film production company.

This significant merger, valued at approximately $110 billion, is anticipated to finalize on October 6. It will bring together two influential Hollywood entities, combining Paramount+ and HBO Max along with networks like CBS, CNN, MTV, TBS, Comedy Central, and Food Network. Additionally, the new Skydance will oversee major franchises including “The Lord of the Rings,” “Game of Thrones,” the DC Universe, and “Yellowstone.”

The merger follows a prolonged corporate struggle. Earlier, Netflix had planned to acquire Warner Bros.’ streaming and studio assets before the larger Paramount agreement was set in motion. There was significant legal opposition from twelve states, who argued that the merger could hinder competition and negatively impact consumers and workers. However, a judge recently approved a settlement with the state’s attorneys general.

Ellison emphasized that the Paramount and Warner Bros. brands will continue to hold importance. He stated, “We never intended for a new corporate identity to undermine, change, or overshadow either brand,” on a social media platform. According to him, the new name provides a distinctive identity for the company while ensuring that both studios maintain their prominence.
