Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey Set to Guide Government on the Evolution of Military Strategy

An Unexpected Team Takes the Lead.

The US Department of Defense has unveiled a new project aimed at assessing the technological requirements for future military engagements. The initiative, termed Project Meridian, is designed to explore future battlefields, pinpoint the necessary weapons and technologies that military personnel will need to excel, and recommend tangible methods for developing, testing, and deploying these capabilities to ensure the US maintains a strategic advantage in the 21st century and beyond, as per Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s announcement.

This project will be spearheaded by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich. Notably, none of them have served in the military. Musk’s SpaceXAI and Luckey’s Anduril are already engaged in ongoing contracts with the Pentagon, reportedly valued at up to $4.16 billion. Although Gingrich lacks direct affiliations with the tech industry, he has collaborated with military organizations on various initiatives and received an honorary doctorate from Air University last year.

This year alone, the Pentagon has faced several controversies, including leaking classified military strategies, risking international tensions due to reliance on AI-generated analysis, and incorrectly categorizing a company as a supply chain hazard after it resisted altering its AI safeguards. These incidents suggest that the military could benefit from expert insight. However, some skeptics might view Project Meridian as more of a mechanism for enriching allies of the current administration rather than a genuine effort to enhance military effectiveness.
