One of the enjoyable aspects of being in tech journalism is getting exclusive previews of upcoming gadgets. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit New York City to preview the Insta360 X6 ahead of its release. This was more than just a product launch; it was a moment for Insta360 to share its journey and future aspirations.
While the Insta360 X6 is impressive, I left the event feeling even more enthusiastic about the ecosystem the brand is developing.
The Insta360 X6 is fantastic, but I am more thrilled about what the brand is envisioning for its future.
Why isn’t the public embracing 360-degree video more?

Insta360 debuted its first 360-degree camera a decade ago—the Insta360 Nano, which I encountered at CES. It was a unique device that connected to iPhones.
Back then, Insta360 was a nascent brand with lofty ambitions, yet I was skeptical about its longevity. My doubt stemmed not from a lack of faith in the product’s appeal, but from concerns about widespread adoption.
Creating 360-degree content presented numerous challenges. Specialized cameras were essential, but that was just the beginning. There was also the need for specific software for processing the clips, as well as the editing skills required to finalize the product. As someone involved in content creation, I recognized that video production is time-consuming, and during that time, powerful computers were required—this was for standard 2D videos! The thought of creating fully immersive 360-degree content seemed daunting.
At the time, it all felt rather unrealistic. Perhaps I was short-sighted, but Insta360 had a clearer vision. The brand flourished and has since become a leading name in consumer 360-degree cameras. The industry’s growth is clearly evident, and progress continues.
How is Insta360 making 360-degree content more accessible?

Insta360 aims to broaden the reach of 360-degree content. Though currently a niche activity largely dominated by thrill-seekers and extreme sports fans, there’s budding potential in sectors like real estate and tourism. While adoption among casual users is growing, it has not yet reached critical mass. After my discussions with the Insta360 team, I believe this will change soon.
Having interacted with the Insta360 team, I’m confident that 360-degree cameras are on the verge of becoming mainstream.
Insta360 is on a promising trajectory to make 360-degree video accessible to everyone. Alongside other technology advancements, the company has addressed key obstacles. The latest cameras boast remarkable video quality, including 8K recording, and are much sturdier. They also come with protective lens covers for those vulnerable fisheye lenses.
Moreover, advancements in smartphones now allow for easier content editing, aided by AI and cloud processing. Insta360 has developed its own mobile editing app, along with a cloud service, dramatically simplifying the process of producing 360-degree content even for those with modest smartphones and minimal editing skills.
Introducing AI in video editing
While the process still demanded a certain level of skill and time, Insta360 has launched a “zero-edit” approach, making 360-degree video creation more accessible than ever. This shift may well enable mainstream adoption!
For those who prefer a more traditional editing method, Insta360 offers the “APEV Model”—a multi-modal AI framework that simplifies and enhances 360-degree video editing capabilities. This technology analyzes raw footage and utilizes impressive editing features.
The X6 includes AI Director, a tool that evaluates footage to identify the highlights. Once the camera is charging, it will automatically generate a daily vlog and send the final video to your phone. This feature allows you to focus on your adventures while the technology handles everything else.
If you want a more manual approach, Auto Edit 2.0 can create videos from selected clips, incorporating highlights and music while automating the entire process.
Additionally, Insta360’s cloud services are now enhanced with Gemini support via Moments Pro. This technology allows for video editing using simple commands, giving users more control over how their videos are edited.
360-degree cameras may soon dominate the market!

Insta360 has ambitious plans to expand the capabilities of 360-degree cameras. The goal is for these devices to replace a wide array of traditional cameras, and the outlook appears bright.
Insta360 has grand aspirations. The goal is for its cameras to supplant action cameras, webcams, gimbals, and more.
The Insta360 X6 is highly adaptable. Despite its 360-degree filming ability, users can also crop out specific frames to create standard 2D videos. With its maximum resolution of 8K, robust build, and compact size, the X6 holds potential as an action camera too.
Moreover, it can function as a webcam for video calls. Its 360-degree recording capability provides data essential for smoothing video during post-processing, allowing it to potentially replace a gimbal.

The quest for a single 360-degree camera that replaces all others is a vision Insta360 shares. It’s an intriguing proposition that seems attainable as these cameras improve and provide more versatile shooting options, contingent upon the software’s evolution.
Only time will tell if this vision holds true, but attending this recent Insta360 event has certainly bolstered my optimism regarding the future of 360-degree cameras.
What are your thoughts? Do you believe in a future where 360-degree cameras dominate the portable camera landscape? Are you prepared to trade in your other devices for a single 360-degree option?
