Why I’m Struggling to Part Ways with My Galaxy Z Fold 8

It has been almost two weeks since I began using the Galaxy Z Fold 8, having had some time to familiarize myself with its features beforehand. However, I didn’t expect to feel such a strong preference for this model over all others I typically test. Despite normally reviewing over 40 smartphones annually, I find myself unwilling to switch to any other device as I am thoroughly enjoying my experience with the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
For those who have used the Galaxy Z Fold 8, it’s clear that the enjoyment extends beyond the initial excitement. Although there are some drawbacks to the device, the performance is impressive enough that I find myself overlooking them.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is here to stay in my collection, and I highly recommend that you consider adding it to yours as well.

The Design of the Z Fold 8 Stands Out
Since using foldable phones beginning with the Galaxy Z Fold 2, I’ve come to prefer clamshell styles over book-style designs. Although the larger internal screens on devices such as the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 7 are appealing, they never quite felt right for me. Even other popular models, like the Motorola Razr Fold, seem to miss that crucial element that would make them more accessible to everyday users.
In comparison, clamshell models are generally more user-friendly and cost-effective for those accustomed to standard smartphones. After long anticipation, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 finally bridges that gap, aligning with what I was hoping to find. While I appreciated the efforts by Google with the initial Pixel Fold, I felt they did not effectively learn from its chilly reception.
Fortunately, Samsung has successfully avoided the same pitfalls with this latest iteration. The design of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is excellent; it’s both lightweight and compact, ideal for various users, including those with larger hands. Its portability cannot be understated, as it comfortably fits in most pockets.
Two Distinct Experiences in One Device
The 5.5-inch cover display strikes a balance, providing enough utility without the constant need to unfold the phone. It has a comfortable height and presents social media, emails, and web content beautifully in its spacious 16:10 aspect ratio.
When fully opened, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 offers an excellent combined experience without the compromises often found in its competitors. With models like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, I often feel torn between the cover screen experience not quite meeting expectations or apps that struggle in a nearly square aspect ratio. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 avoids these issues altogether; browsing, using Google Maps, and watching YouTube are all seamless and enjoyable. Should an app not function perfectly within this layout, simply switch to portrait mode for a more familiar interface.
Software That Matches the Hardware
A company can create an outstanding hardware design, but without a competent software experience, it won’t be worth much. Fortunately, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 excels in user experience. It’s easy to set up preferred app pairs, and One UI 9 retains user customizations effectively. Although changing one app in a pair isn’t as effortless as it is on the Microsoft Surface Duo, it’s still a quick process.
The transition between the cover and large display is smooth. If I am using an app on the cover and need more screen real estate, I can open the phone without restarting the app, as it automatically adjusts to the larger display — a significant improvement over previous models.
While some users may miss the Flex Mode feature, I didn’t find it essential. However, I truly enjoy the Tent Mode capabilities, especially for watching videos, leveraging the superior viewing experience provided by the cover display.
The Z Fold 8’s Drawbacks, Yet I Still Adore It
No smartphone is perfect, but the truly exceptional models help you overlook their flaws. While it’s recognized that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has its downsides, such as limitations in camera quality—especially without a telephoto lens—I can acknowledge that these aspects don’t ultimately detract from my enjoyment of the device.
Moreover, the audio quality and speaker location feel subpar and could be improved for a better experience. However, this is not a significant concern for me as I primarily use headphones. Despite the few shortcomings, the myriad positives of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 make it a standout choice.
While it’s understandable for some to hesitate before committing to a premium device like this one, I’m content with the idea that not all phones have to cater to everyone’s needs, resulting in a truly glorious device in the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
