Meta Trial Uncovers Alarmingly Low Engagement with Instagram’s Take a Break Feature

Are smartphones our allies or adversaries? Often, it appears that tech companies are focused more on addressing addiction to their platforms than creating new features. This is evident with tools like the Pause Point on Pixel devices, aimed at promoting healthier usage habits. However, the big question remains: Are the most susceptible users engaging with these features? According to Meta, the answer is concerning.

Meta is currently facing legal action from 29 states regarding safety and privacy concerns that affect younger users, with recent revelations shared by a former data scientist shedding light on the situation.

Instagram launched its Take a Break feature in 2021, intended to remind users to take a pause if they’ve been on the app for an extended period. While this tool seems to align with parents’ hopes for their teens to manage their app usage, actual engagement with it raises questions.

The data scientist revealed that, despite Meta claiming that approximately 90% of teens use the Take a Break feature, internal data indicated that only about 0.165% to 0.2% of teens genuinely engaged with it. Although the feature was previously optional, it is now activated by default for teen accounts.

Given Meta’s extensive user base, the company’s lawyers argued that those small percentages still correspond to hundreds of thousands of teens. However, it’s essential to recognize how many users seem to navigate the platform without utilizing available protective measures.

As the saying goes: You can present teens with behavioral correction tools, but you can’t force them to utilize them.
