Samsung Unveils Future of 3D Memory While Consumers Seek Affordable DDR5 Solutions

The latest technological advancements are impressive, yet a significant portion will primarily serve AI data centers.

Samsung’s recent unveiling of its next-generation 3D memory and V-NAND storage would have once sparked excitement for faster PC performance and quicker file access. However, the realization that much of this technology will be used primarily by AI data centers casts a shadow over the announcement.

During the Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) exhibition in Santa Clara, Samsung introduced concept models for zHBM, a new form of HBM memory focused on data centers and AI applications. This innovative memory architecture vertically stacks HBM directly over AI accelerators, enhancing performance by up to eight times. Integrating next-gen wafer bonding technology allows for more than ten times the memory density compared to current HBM5 standards, while also tripling energy efficiency.

The company also revealed a novel type of V-NAND memory for SSDs and other storage devices, named V10 BV-NAND. This new architecture incorporates over 400 layers of memory cells, boosting density by around 58 percent compared to its predecessor, V9, while enhancing read, write, and I/O performance.

Additionally, Samsung presented zNAND-O, an advanced V-NAND solution designed for edge AI applications, which features high space efficiency, improved I/O performance, and reduced latency. Another highlight was LPDDR5X-PIM, the first LPDDR memory to utilize processing-in-memory technology, allowing data processing to occur directly within the memory, thus improving overall efficiency.

Samsung, alongside SK Hynix, holds substantial control over memory manufacturing. As many are aware, both companies are struggling to meet the soaring demand generated by the current AI boom. This shortfall is causing skyrocketing prices for a wide range of electronics, including gaming consoles, smartphones, and laptops.
