OKX Seeks AI-Powered Agents for Autonomous Hiring and Payment Systems

As AI agents start to interact with humans and each other, they require systems for job acquisition, payment processing, and trust-building. OKX, a cryptocurrency exchange, is launching a platform aimed at facilitating these needs, allowing AI agents to autonomously hire each other, manage payments, and cultivate portable reputations on the blockchain.
The platform, named OKX AI, will be accessible to developers beginning Tuesday after a closed beta phase with 50 initial AI service providers. This marketplace is built on prior technology developed by OKX that enables AI agents to utilize digital wallets, conduct transactions through stablecoins, and maintain continuous identities.
This launch is part of OKX’s strategy to transition beyond mere cryptocurrency trading as it aims to evolve into a more comprehensive fintech entity. With over 150 million users around the world, the company anticipates that the next wave of clients will include not only humans but also autonomous AI agents, giving rise to a burgeoning “agent economy.”
“The next ten years will see the rise of individual enterprises raking in over a million dollars each year, as everyone effectively has access to an endless workforce,” stated Star Xu, the founder and CEO of OKX, in an interview. “Current financial systems were designed for people. However, the agent economy demands infrastructure tailored for autonomous software, which is the rationale behind the creation of OKX.AI.”
Haider Rafique, the Chief Marketing Officer and global managing partner at OKX, expressed confidence that “agentic commerce” could potentially be worth a trillion dollars in the next five years, mainly fueled by microtransactions and independent software.
This marketplace is directed at cryptocurrency developers working on AI projects and solo entrepreneurs seeking to automate certain business functions using AI agents. Rafique highlighted that the platform aims to empower developers to create applications tailored for the marketplace, enabling others to utilize AI tools without needing to develop them independently.
Among the early developers participating are CertiK, which provides services for AI agents to evaluate the security of crypto wallets or tokens before transactions, and CoinAnk, offering real-time market data on a per-query basis. GenLayer is also involved, contributing dispute resolution mechanisms to assist AI agents in addressing contractual conflicts.
Utilizing blockchain technology and stablecoin payments, the company asserts that AI agents can handle transactions at any hour, including low-value microtransactions that would be cumbersome through traditional payment methods.
Rafique noted that OKX will implement the same fraud detection and compliance systems, as well as infrastructure developed for its cryptocurrency exchange, to support the marketplace, which will be launched in stages before reaching wider availability.
OKX’s platform arrives amid a surge of technology firms and startups striving to establish the framework necessary for AI agents, including developer environments, marketplaces, and payment systems. Albert Castellana, co-founder and CEO of GenLayer Labs, emphasized that the primary challenge lies not only in enabling AI agents to transact but also in facilitating their discovery and conflict resolution.
“What we are creating effectively functions as a digital court system,” Castellana mentioned. “Our main hurdle is distribution — a capability that OKX already possesses.”
Rafique contended that OKX’s greatest asset is not merely its technological advancements but also its established reach. The firm believes its extensive network of crypto developers and users will serve as a strong foundation for the marketplace, with plans that extend well beyond digital currencies.
In March, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the parent organization of the New York Stock Exchange, infused approximately $200 million into OKX at a valuation of $25 billion. Rafique indicated that this partnership aligns with the company’s aspiration to “modernize markets” through tokenization and represents a simultaneous effort to “modernize money” for the age of autonomous software.
Developers can access the marketplace via Onchain OS, OKX’s toolkit designed for integrating AI agents with blockchain services. The company stated that no OKX account is necessary to begin, and the platform is compatible with various AI coding frameworks.
Focusing initially on developers rather than retail users, OKX has set its sights on India, which has emerged as a significant center for AI and blockchain developers. The company aims to connect with this community even before fully reviving its crypto trading operations.
OKX temporarily suspended its services in India in 2024 while navigating the nation’s regulatory landscape concerning crypto exchanges. Rafique confirmed that India is a priority market, noting that developer-centric products such as OKX AI face fewer regulatory barriers than traditional cryptocurrency trading, facilitating quicker integration with the local developer community.
