Proton Unveils Lumo Chatbot with Privacy-Centric Image Creation Features

Lumo 2.0 now offers the ability to search for pertinent background details.

Proton has launched its most significant update for the Lumo chatbot, nearly a year after its initial release. The newly upgraded Lumo 2.0 includes features for image recognition and generation, establishing it as a formidable competitor to ChatGPT and Gemini. According to Proton, the enhanced chatbot can now create images and also analyze and modify them. All discussions involving images continue to be safeguarded by zero-access encryption, ensuring that only users on their own devices can access them, with no possibility for third-party access, including Proton itself.

Beyond image capabilities, Lumo has introduced a reasoning mode. The results indicate that Lumo 2.0 Lite outperformed Lumo 1.4 by 127 percent on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index benchmark, while the advanced Lumo 2.0 Max achieved a 240 percent increase. This benchmark assesses a model’s competence across various tasks. The upgraded Lumo offers enhanced context, enabling it to provide deeper insights and more precise answers. Additionally, it can now retrieve the latest information and include source citations in its responses.

Lumo 2.0 is now operational. The basic AI features remain free, while a subscription of $10 per month is required for Lumo Plus, which provides unlimited conversations, advanced image generation, and access to more sophisticated models from Proton.

Proton’s founder and CEO, Andy Yen, stated, “Lumo 2.0 has been completely rebuilt, and the addition of reasoning mode grants it robust new functionalities. User testing shows that the differences are now so subtle that, for many applications, users struggle to discern any qualitative distinction between Lumo 2.0 Max and the latest offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. Lumo 2.0 illustrates that individuals no longer have to compromise between advanced AI capabilities and essential privacy safeguards.”
