Meta Introduces ‘AI Mode’ on Facebook: Harnessing Public Insights Across Its Ecosystem

Meta is stepping up its efforts in the AI arena by announcing new features on Facebook that reshape how users search for information, create content, and engage with the platform. This initiative was revealed on Monday.
The standout addition is “AI Mode,” a searching feature that employs Meta’s AI to provide answers by sifting through public posts on Facebook, including Groups and Reels. Users can simply ask a question in everyday language and receive a summarized response based on ongoing discussions.
This announcement follows the previous month’s introduction of Forum, a Reddit-like app that features an “Ask” tab, where users can ask questions and receive answers derived from conversations within Facebook Groups.
Both AI Mode and the Ask tab in Forum bring up important concerns regarding the accuracy of responses generated from user-generated content. Since the AI synthesizes information from regular users instead of verified sources, there’s a risk of encountering outdated or erroneous information, a worry already raised about Google’s own AI functionalities.
In addition to these search enhancements, Facebook is rolling out new editing tools that allow users to experiment with collage cutouts and transition effects in video montages. Another new feature includes AI-driven photo presets that enable users to alter their appearances with various clothing, hairstyles, and accessories.
Sports enthusiasts can, for example, virtually don their favorite team’s jerseys by tapping the “AI Edit” icon in Stories, selecting “Wear It,” or by going to their profile picture and choosing “Restyle profile picture with AI” and “Wardrobe.”
These enhancements contribute to an expanding array of AI capabilities that Meta has introduced on Facebook in recent months. Back in February, Meta launched animated profile pictures that give life to still images, adding effects like waves or virtual party hats. In March, Meta also integrated AI features into Facebook Marketplace to automatically handle buyer inquiries for sellers.
Most recently, earlier this month, Facebook rolled out an AI assistant designed for creators, providing personalized recommendations such as optimal posting times and insights from audience comments based on the creator’s content and performance metrics.
These various updates are indicative of Meta’s overarching strategy: to enhance the utility and engagement of Facebook through AI tools, while also exploring new revenue streams. Alongside these feature updates, the company has introduced global subscription options for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, starting at $3.99 per month, which unlock additional functionalities, with more AI-centric subscription models expected soon.
