Your Daily Reminder: Digital Content Isn’t Truly Yours

Customers in Europe will soon face the loss of access to Studio Canal films purchased via the PlayStation Store.
Sony has informed customers across several European nations that they will soon no longer have access to certain movies purchased on the PlayStation Store. This is due to an impending expiration of a licensing agreement with Studio Canal. For those who have bought items from the list in the affected regions, which consist of hundreds of films, these will “be removed from your video library” on September 1. This situation serves as another stark reminder that buying digital content does not guarantee ownership—once licenses expire or servers go offline, any paid content may also disappear.
The announcement regarding the removal of Studio Canal movies appeared on various regional pages of the PlayStation Store, including those for customers in the UK, France, Italy, and Spain. Unfortunately, there’s little hope for refunds, as the notice makes no mention of such options. Although the expiration date is still a few months away, there remains a possibility for changes. In the past, the PlayStation Store had plans to remove Discovery shows due to similar licensing problems, but eventually, a new agreement was reached, allowing those shows to remain available.
