Xbox CEO Asha Sharma Appointed to Federal Reserve Advisory Role on Employment Just Days Post-Layoff Announcement

In a recent announcement, the US Federal Reserve revealed the leaders who will guide its task forces focused on monetary policy. Among these appointments is Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Xbox. Her role on the productivity and jobs team will involve analyzing the economic effects of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence to aid the central bank’s policy decisions.

Sharma, who transitioned to the gaming sector from Microsoft’s Core AI division, recently announced significant layoffs of 3,200 employees from Xbox divisions. This staff reduction aligns with broader trends at Microsoft, which has been cutting jobs across various departments. However, the timing raises concerns as the gaming industry grapples with staffing issues and responsible AI implementation.

Sharma is joined by Marc Andreessen, who has faced criticism for his views on AI, and Charles I. Jones, an economics professor from Stanford currently on leave to work at the Anthropic Institute. While Jones brings academic credentials, the overall composition of this advisory group may leave some questioning its capacity to critically address the challenges posed by artificial intelligence in the job market.
