X Revamps Its Algorithm for a Friendlier Experience, Moving Away from Conflict

X has implemented a modification to its algorithm in order to enhance the visibility of posts from users’ “mutuals” — those followed by the user and who also follow them back, according to Nikita Bier, the head of product, who made the announcement on Monday.

“We discovered that essential data was absent from the algorithm, causing friends’ replies to become less prominent. This led to a perception of the reply section as a competitive space filled with unfamiliar voices,” Bier explained.

While this adjustment may not completely transform the platform’s user experience, it is intended to foster a greater sense of community, rather than allowing a flood of disconnected opinions to dominate the conversation.

Bier emphasized that this change would facilitate the formation of groups based on shared interests, a feature that many users have expressed a desire for.

Recently, X has rolled out various updates aimed at positioning the site as a more significant hub for content creators. Earlier this year, the platform altered its compensation system to encourage original content creation rather than merely content aggregation. Additionally, a new video editor was introduced earlier this month to assist users in creating content more effectively on the platform.

This latest adjustment comes in the wake of algorithm changes made by Meta’s Threads, aimed at fostering community engagement in a bid to distinguish itself from X. For example, Threads launched a feature called Your Algo last month, allowing users to privately manage their feed content. The platform has also achieved 500 million monthly active users.
