Weekend Watchlist: 5 Fresh Shows to Binge on Netflix, Hulu, and Beyond (July 10-12)

The month of July is sizzling with exciting television premieres. Apple TV has kicked off its third season of Silo, and the Legally Blonde prequel series, titled Elle, made a strong debut as Prime Video’s leading original series last week. This coming weekend, Netflix is set to unveil its first season of a much-anticipated adaptation based on a beloved book series, which is our top pick for this weekend. With only eight episodes, it’s a series that can be binge-watched in one sitting.
In other streaming news, Peacock introduces a new drama with a stellar lineup of award-winning actors. Meanwhile, MGM+ is about to launch a gripping New York crime drama, and Apple TV is bringing back a delightful comedy for its fifth season. Additionally, an iconic competition show is returning for its 22nd season.

Trying Season 5
Families Come in All Shapes and Sizes
I appreciate the charm of a thoughtful British series like Trying. The show humorously addresses the complexities of adoption as it follows a couple, Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason Ross (Rafe Spall), who are eager to become parents after struggling with infertility. Eventually, they adopt two siblings, Princess (Mickey McAnulty) and Tyler (Eden Togwell), and season 5 sees a time jump as they navigate the challenges of raising the teens, particularly with the biological mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), reentering their lives.
The first episode of Trying season 5 is currently available on Apple TV.

The Westies
Crime and Punishment in New York City
Creating a gripping crime drama relies heavily on a talented team. Chris Brancato, known for Narcos and Godfather of Harlem, teams up with Michael Panes for The Westies, an MGM+ series highlighting the notorious Irish gang of the same name that ruled Hell’s Kitchen in the 1980s. Facing off against the Italian mafia, led by Eamon Sweeney (J. K. Simmons), the Westies will fight fiercely to protect their territory, while local police keep a close watch.
The first two episodes of The Westies premiere on MGM+ on July 12.

The Five-Star Weekend
Rediscovering Friendship During a Weekend Getaway
Peacock has put together a remarkable cast for The Five-Star Weekend, based on Elin Hilderbrand’s latest novel. The series stars Jennifer Garner, Chloë Sevigny, Regina Hall, Gemma Chan, D’Arcy Carden, and Timothy Olyphant. In the wake of her husband’s tragic death, renowned chef Hollis Shaw (Garner) plans a restorative girls’ getaway in Nantucket with friends from different times in her life. While the retreat aims to support Hollis, every woman grapples with her struggles, making the series relatable beyond its lavish setting.
All eight episodes of The Five-Star Weekend are now available to stream on Peacock.

Little House on the Prairie Season 1
The Classic Stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder Come Alive on Netflix
Many are familiar with Little House on the Prairie through Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic books or the classic 1970s-80s NBC adaptation. Netflix’s new take is set to enchant a new generation with stories of life on the American frontier. The series centers on Laura Ingalls (Alice Halsey) and her family as they embark on a journey to Kansas in the 1800s, confronting various challenges while adapting to life alongside the Osage people. Netflix’s decision to renew the series before its premiere speaks volumes about its anticipated quality.
All eight episodes of Little House on the Prairie season 1 are now streaming on Netflix.
