OpenAI Declares GPT-5.6 the ‘Top Choice’ for Microsoft Copilot Amid Rumors of Separation

This week, reports surfaced indicating that Microsoft is beginning to substitute some of OpenAI’s technology with its own internal models as part of a cost-reduction strategy. These in-house models, referred to as MAI, are being increasingly integrated into applications like Word and Excel.

This development has sparked questions about the current relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI. Once closely linked, the two companies are now conveying mixed messages about their collaboration—are they beginning to part ways?

In response to these speculations, OpenAI has made a definitive statement. During the launch of its GPT 5.6 on Thursday, the organization declared that it would be the “preferred model” for Microsoft’s 365 Copilot.

According to a blog entry from OpenAI, the new GPT 5.6 will support Microsoft users across various productivity tools, encompassing Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more.

OpenAI emphasized in its announcement that their collaboration with Microsoft focuses on delivering the advantages of advanced AI to a wider audience and reiterated their enthusiasm for continuing this mutual commitment.

However, the precise implications of being labeled a “preferred model” remain somewhat ambiguous, apart from the assurance that OpenAI’s technology will still be integral to Microsoft’s applications.

It’s worth noting that while Microsoft was reported to be increasingly utilizing its own AI models, there was no indication that the ChatGPT software would be withdrawn from Microsoft applications. Thus, the announcement regarding the “preferred model” does not seem to contradict earlier claims.
