Apple’s CarPlay allows users to bring their familiar iOS experience, including apps and media, directly to their car’s dashboard. While certain vehicle manufacturers have started to move away from incorporating CarPlay, it remains widely accessible in numerous cars.
Many may not realize that there are two versions of CarPlay: the standard version users are accustomed to, and CarPlay Ultra. While theoretically similar, CarPlay Ultra offers a more robust functionality. It enables control over multiple aspects of the car rather than just the infotainment screen. Additionally, CarPlay Ultra offers extensive customization options. However, it is not yet widely available, and we expect to see more vehicles incorporating it in the near future.
The Familiar CarPlay
The standard version of CarPlay made its debut in 2014 with iOS 7.1. Using either a USB connection or wireless connection, users can connect their iPhone to their vehicle, and the dashboard presents a car-optimized version of iOS. CarPlay simplifies access to applications without needing to interact with the phone directly, making it a safer option.
However, not all applications are compatible; the ones that do work are primarily focused on navigation, music streaming, and messaging. With a few taps or voice commands through Siri, users can listen to their Apple Music playlists or get directions via Maps. This approach is more practical and safe than constantly handling a phone.
Despite its advantages, CarPlay has limitations. It is not deeply integrated with vehicle systems, so users may need to exit CarPlay to adjust certain native features, like changing driving modes or climate control settings. This can lead to complications while driving.
What Makes CarPlay Ultra Unique?
With CarPlay Ultra, controls for systems like air conditioning and the radio are incorporated, allowing an uninterrupted interface experience. It truly creates the impression of a vehicle system crafted by Apple.
However, there are challenges. While standard CarPlay is offered in over 800 models, CarPlay Ultra is currently limited to specific luxury models, like those from Aston Martin, particularly in North America. Although Porsche has hinted at future support for CarPlay Ultra, it has yet to materialize, possibly due to manufacturers hesitating to cede full control to Apple. To utilize this advanced version, users need an iPhone 12 or newer, and it operates solely through wireless connections.
Apple has indicated that CarPlay Ultra will be available in additional vehicles over time, but based on current trends, this availability may take longer than anticipated.
