In Brief
- A developer has utilized Fable 5 to reinvent the reMarkable Paper Pro as an AI-driven version of Tom Riddle’s diary from the Harry Potter series.
- This modification allows handwritten notes to vanish before an AI responds, and the AI’s reply appears in animated handwriting on the E-Ink screen.
- It requires a customized reMarkable tablet in developer mode and is compatible with OpenAI models or other approved services.
If you’ve ever dreamed of possessing the enchanting diary from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, a new open-source project makes that dream a reality. A developer has crafted a modification for the reMarkable Paper Pro that turns the E-Ink tablet into an AI-infused version of Tom Riddle’s magical diary.
Maxime Rivest has designed this experience to mimic writing in a genuine notebook rather than communicating with an AI. Users can write a message with the stylus, pause momentarily, and then watch as their handwriting gradually fades away, as if the tablet is absorbing it. After a brief moment of reflection, an answer appears in a flowing cursive, writing itself onto the page seamlessly. Eventually, that response also fades away.

The developer’s intention is to completely eliminate the traditional AI interface. This means no keyboards, chat boxes, or bright screens. Instead, users engage with the AI by writing directly on the tablet.
On the technical side, the project captures an image of the handwritten page, sends it to a vision-enabled large language model, and streams the AI’s response back to the tablet. It works with APIs compatible with OpenAI, such as OpenAI, OpenRouter, and Groq, along with local servers that facilitate image input.
According to insights shared on the developer’s GitHub, responses start appearing on the E-Ink display approximately one second after the message is sent, with the handwriting animation commencing even before the AI completes generating its response.
However, setting up this project is not straightforward. It is exclusively compatible with the reMarkable Paper Pro, requires developer mode, SSH access, and third-party launcher software, and entails significant system modifications by temporarily altering the tablet’s user interface. The developer also warns that it operates with root privileges, has undergone testing on specific software versions only, and may cease function following future updates.
