The Essential Physical Keyboard for Passionate Mobile Typists

Smartphones have evolved to the extent that they can serve as substitutes for personal computers, yet many users have yet to explore this option. I’ve fully adopted the mobile computing lifestyle and experimented with various accessories, especially keyboards, to facilitate this transition. If you envision yourself placing your phone on a table at a café to tackle some tasks, a certain type of keyboard is essential.

Your Bluetooth Keyboard Should Feature a Built-In Stand

This Makes Packing Simpler

As I’ve mentioned before, a simple phone stand can significantly enhance your phone experience, and I firmly believe this. I use phone stands regularly, with my kitchen counter model being the most utilized. Keeping one nearby in my home office allows me to place my phone consistently each day. However, using one while out and about isn’t as convenient.

When I sit down to write using my phone or tablet, retrieving a keyboard and mouse already adds an extra layer of effort compared to pulling out a laptop. Having to dig into my bag a third time feels excessive, leading to a cluttered workspace. I prefer not to appear as though I’ve taken over a library corner with my scattered items.

The good news is that there are now numerous Bluetooth keyboards specially designed for mobile devices, many of which include built-in stands. You simply set your phone on the stand, activate the keyboard, and you’re ready to go.

These keyboards come in various styles and levels of quality. While I can’t single out the best one, I have a notable preference for the Satechi OnTheGo Bluetooth keyboard, which is featured in my images and costs around $80. Others in my circle at How-To Geek have also praised Satechi’s keyboard in their reviews.

Choose a Keyboard with a Stand That Also Acts as a Cover

This Will Safeguard Your Keyboard During Transit

Many Bluetooth keyboards I’ve tried previously were not designed with portability in mind. They were primarily suited for desk use, lacking a protective case, which made them vulnerable to damage from other items in my bag. If you’ve ever experienced a randomly malfunctioning key or had one pop off, you understand the hazards.

While some keyboards come with basic sleeves for protection, those with integrated stands are more innovative. The cover serves as a stand that folds out, providing a stable and wide surface for your phone, even accommodating an iPad Mini and iPhone side by side. It’s also spacious enough for a single 12-inch tablet, reminiscent of Microsoft Surface devices or popular folio cases for iPads and Android tablets.

My Phone Feels More Stable and Secure

It’s Less Likely to Topple with Minor Disturbances

There’s a broad range of phone stands available. Decorative wooden ones may look aesthetically pleasing but often lack the adjustability needed for a comfortable viewing angle. Portable stands that accompany Bluetooth keyboards can be pocket-sized but sometimes aren’t adequately stable for holding a phone or tablet securely.

The folio stand that I prefer eliminates that concern. Thanks to its sturdy hinge, my phone remains securely placed with minimal wobbling during use and is much less likely to fall and sustain damage on a hard surface.

You’ll Stand Out Less

This adjustment has made a significant difference in my everyday carry routine. Although my compact Motorola Razr Fold may be smaller than typical tablets displayed in such stands, it still resembles a tablet. These types of cases have become so commonplace that people expect to see tablets positioned in this manner.

If you’re considering a mouse to complement your keyboard stand, I have positive feedback for the Satechi OnTheGo Bluetooth mouse as well. I’ve sampled multiple mice, but Satechi’s offering has become my favorite for both home and travel use.
