This 3D Print is Intentionally Disposable—and It’s My Most Practical Creation Yet

When I purchased my first 3D printer, I envisioned creating toys, gadgets, and occasional prototypes. Surprisingly, one of the most practical items I’ve printed is a simple plastic clamp, specifically designed to be damaged by my CNC bit. These plastic clamps protect my bits during errant cuts, and rather than continually buying injection-molded versions, I now produce them affordably at home.
Plastic is Ideal for Disposable Parts
Previously, I Frequently Bought Injection-Molded Parts
As a hobbyist, I engage in various activities, one of which is CNC machining with wood. Although my CNC machine can work with metal, I prefer using wood due to my less favorable experience with metal. This complements my woodworking pursuits well. But where does 3D printing fit in? Mainly, it’s beneficial for producing hold downs and clamps.
While there are metal clamps available for CNCs, which I’ve used before, they can be problematic. When a CNC bit encounters metal, it often gets damaged. This led me to adopt plastic clamps years ago, which changed everything. The CNC bit could hit the plastic clamp without sustaining damage.
However, I found myself purchasing these clamps frequently. Even though they were relatively inexpensive, the need to buy injection-molded clamps became tiresome. The introduction of 3D printing transformed this aspect of my work.
3D Printing Enables Me to Create Disposable Parts at Home
It’s More Cost-Effective, and I Can Produce as Many as Needed
Instead of relying on pre-made parts designed for destruction, I can now fabricate my clamps right at home. Many manufacturers provide clamp designs online for free, which became my starting point.
The ability to 3D print clamps on my own means that if I damage one, I can replace it instantly. The cost of filament for a single clamp is negligible, allowing me to print multiple clamps at once, ensuring I always have replacements on hand.
Printing each clamp typically takes just 15-20 minutes, so I can queue up several items before heading to bed and wake up to a full set on the build plate. This eliminates the need to wait for shipping from online retailers.
I Can Innovate New Designs Whenever Necessary
I’m No Longer Restricted by What’s Available Online
Previously, my options for clamps were limited to what retailers had in stock. If a specific design was only available in metal, I had to either forgo it or buy the metal version.
Now, I have the flexibility to convert typically metal clamps into plastic ones, find existing designs online, or even create my own from scratch. Any clamp I need costs only a few cents, so if it gets damaged, I can easily replace it.
This also allows me to experiment with different clamp styles at minimal cost rather than spending several dollars on items from online stores. If a new style doesn’t work for me, I simply discard the inexpensive plastic and move on to the next concept.
3D Printing Has Unlocked New Possibilities for Me
Having the capability to 3D print items at home is something I now take for granted. It’s remarkable how many products that once cost significant amounts and required lengthy shipping times are now available to me for mere pennies in a matter of hours.
The ability to create disposable parts is particularly gratifying because I no longer feel as if I’m tossing away money every time I ruin a clamp—now, it’s just a small amount of plastic.
