Teleprompter Operator at the White House Allegedly Strikes It Rich with Bets on Presidential Addresses

A staff member reportedly earned over $100,000 through betting on Kalshi.

Gabriel Perez, who operates the teleprompter for former President Donald Trump, has been placed on administrative leave following revelations of his betting activities on Kalshi, according to reports. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which regulates platforms like Kalshi, is in discussions with Perez regarding the return of over $100,000 he allegedly earned from these bets.

Perez reportedly made substantial wagers on the duration of various speeches made by Trump, including significant events such as the State of the Union address and remarks from international forums. His position gave him prior access to the speeches, which likely aided him in making bets based on insider knowledge. It has also been reported that he withdrew from some bets when Trump deviated from the prepared script.

Kalshi quickly recognized and reported these transactions to the CFTC. Perez has admitted to some of his betting activities during discussions with investigators. At a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump is aware of the situation and described Perez’s actions as “deeply unfortunate” and a “disgrace.” She announced that Perez is on unpaid leave and will not be returning to his position.

Kanishi implemented rules in April 2026 to prevent politicians and athletes from betting on their own elections or events. Subsequently, the platform suspended several political candidates for violating these regulations. Further measures were introduced in June, requiring users to disclose their employment prior to placing certain types of bets.

Despite efforts to mitigate insider trading, attempts by states to regulate prediction markets have faced obstacles. Following a ban on Kalshi in New Jersey, a federal appeals court ruled that the state lacked authority to prohibit the platform, affirming the CFTC’s oversight role.
