T-Mobile National Service Disruption Leaves Thousands of Phones in “SOS” Mode

Service restoration is underway for some users.

Further details can be found below.

If your phone is displaying “SOS” instead of the usual “5G,” you’re not alone. A significant number of T-Mobile users across the nation are experiencing a service outage that started at approximately 4 PM ET on July 27th.

Staff members from a technology publication first observed their T-Mobile devices showing only “SOS.” A deeper look confirmed that many others faced the same problem. Reports on Downdetector indicate over 60,000 issues, while T-Mobile’s customer subreddit has been inundated with posts from affected users, suggesting that more than 200,000 individuals may be impacted.

Interestingly, the outage seems to be affecting not only T-Mobile users but also several Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) relying on T-Mobile’s infrastructure, along with services like Spotify and Xbox Live. However, this could largely be attributed to T-Mobile users being unable to connect, which hampers access to services on other networks.

About an hour after the initial reports surfaced on Downdetector, the number of outage reports reached a plateau at around 62,000. Fortunately, it seems these figures are starting to decline, and some staff members have regained their connections. However, many individuals are still reporting outages that have persisted for nearly two hours. Such large-scale outages typically take time to fully resolve.
