Shopify Reveals AI Search Boosts Traffic and Sales Without Displacing Google

Shopify, a leading e-commerce software provider, is witnessing significant advantages from the growing use of AI in search functionalities.

During the recent second-quarter earnings discussion, Shopify President Harley Finkelstein remarked that AI has become an enhancement to search capabilities, particularly benefiting smaller merchants who make up a significant portion of their clientele. The positive financial outcomes for the company this quarter were, in part, attributed to the effectiveness of AI in search processes.

This scenario contrasts sharply with the struggles faced by online publishers, where AI-generated summaries have resulted in reduced click-through rates, leading to lower website traffic and diminished advertising revenues.

On the contrary, Shopify views AI as a substantial asset. The company reported that AI-driven user traffic and order volumes to Shopify stores have more than tripled compared to the previous year in the second quarter.

Moreover, AI hasn’t hindered traditional search traffic. Finkelstein noted that search continues to be a key source of buyer traffic for merchants, still showing growth. Over the past two years, conventional search sessions have increased by 1.3 times, representing about a third of all sessions across storefronts.

In the recent quarter, Shopify boasted impressive results, with revenue climbing 36% to $3.6 billion, surpassing Wall Street expectations of $3.4 billion. Gross operating profit also increased by 31% to $1.71 billion, exceeding analysts’ predictions of $1.63 billion.

The company elaborated on the success of AI-driven search for its business.

Finkelstein elaborated, “While traditional search engines rank results based on popular keywords, AI agents delve deeper into Shopify’s comprehensive catalog, utilizing structured data to align products with buyers’ specific needs rather than merely focusing on keywords.”

For instance, if a customer asks an AI assistant for a car seat suitable for three across in a sedan, conventional search would primarily target the term “car seat.” Conversely, an AI agent comprehends the exact requirements, such as dimensions and vehicle type, searching effectively across all these parameters to find the best match rather than just the highest-ranking result.

This capacity for AI to search through multiple criteria has proven beneficial in enhancing conversion rates for merchants.

“The buying experience is becoming more efficient, with 50% of AI-driven sessions landing directly on product description pages—2.5 times more than typical search results,” Finkelstein mentioned.

Additionally, Shopify disclosed that 75% of purchases attributed to AI in the second quarter occurred beyond the top 100 categories, which the company describes as its “sweet spot.”

Shopify also highlighted plans for enhancing its offerings as AI continues to play an influential role in transactions, owing to its secure checkout process.

The firm is collaborating with various AI tools and platforms, having established connections with Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus, Replit, and Vercel, as well as coding platforms like Lovable that empower merchants to innovate on Shopify while retaining their unique styles.
