Robotics Firm Generalist Achieves $3 Billion Valuation, According to Insider Reports

Generalist, a robotics startup, has achieved a valuation of $3 billion following a new funding round led by 8VC, according to insiders familiar with the financing.

The new funding amounts to nearly $200 million, as indicated in a regulatory filing. This capital infusion is an extension of a $400 million Series B funding led by Radical Ventures, announced in June when the company was valued at $2 billion. With this latest investment, the total funding for this round now reaches $600 million.

Both Generalist and 8VC have not provided comments on this development.

Established in 2024 by ex-Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, alongside former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry, Generalist has received early support from investors including 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and AI expert Fei-Fei Li.

The startup has largely flown under the radar until recently.

Generalist is focused on creating an AI foundation model that can operate with a variety of robots. The company claims its recently developed Gen 1.5 model enables robots to learn new tasks from brief video demonstrations lasting between 3 to 12 seconds.

Currently, Generalist is collaborating with a select group of customers, using their insights to refine the model for targeted applications, according to one source.

Generalist faces competition from other companies aiming to create advanced intelligence for robots. Notable rivals include Physical Intelligence, valued at about $11 billion, SoftBank-supported Skild AI, valued at $14 billion, and Genesis AI, which was reportedly seeking funding last month with a valuation of $3 billion.

This influx of funding signals a belief among investors that robotics might be on the verge of achieving a breakthrough similar to the recent progress in generative AI, where robots could potentially execute diverse tasks without the need for specific training for each function. However, due to the limitations of current training methods, some venture capitalists caution that a truly versatile robotics model may still be several years away.
