Reddit’s CEO Expresses Clear Frustration with Google’s AI Summaries

Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, has joined the ranks of other industry leaders expressing discontent with Google’s search features and its AI-generated summaries. In a letter to shareholders prior to the second-quarter earnings call, Huffman emphasized that users prefer engaging directly with Reddit rather than receiving a brief overview of its content.

Clarifying his concerns about Google’s AI-driven search capabilities, Huffman highlighted that Reddit hasn’t seen positive outcomes from this partnership, contrasting it with the benefits derived from traditional search results. He pointed out that while conventional organic search has significantly contributed to growth, the impact of AI-generated summaries has fallen short.

“The traditional 10 blue links have been incredibly valuable for the ecosystem,” Huffman remarked. He conveyed that AI Overviews have not matched this level of success and that this sentiment resonates across various sectors, including businesses and publishers, who are still in search of a mutually beneficial solution.

These remarks coincide with Reddit experiencing a downturn in search traffic in recent months. Reports suggest that the platform is reconsidering its association with Google. Although Reddit has not made any official announcements regarding the continuation or modification of their existing $60 million licensing agreement, Huffman hinted at staying open to various scenarios, stating the importance of maximizing value for Reddit.

Reddit is not the only platform facing challenges in the evolving search environment. Many publishers who have also partnered with Google to license content have witnessed substantial drops in search traffic, as AI-generated summaries tend to obscure links and more users opt for chatbot interfaces instead of traditional searches. Despite these concerns, Google asserts that its AI-driven search innovations are advantageous for the industry.

Huffman has indicated that Reddit is exploring new initiatives to attract users, such as refining the recommendation feed and simplifying the interface for newcomers. He also mentioned the possibility of introducing “a video Reddit experience” and enabling users to listen to posts in a background mode.

“We notice that users are engaging with this off-platform,” he observed. “There’s a growing trend of audio content where individuals narrate Reddit posts, and I believe this format of an audio Reddit can be quite captivating as well.”
