With countless 3D models available, I set out to print some of the best offerings from Thingiverse, a leading platform in the 3D printing community. Here’s my take on the top models from the site.

A whistle surprisingly ranks at #2
It surprisingly works quite well
While browsing Thingiverse’s all-time popular models, I was surprised to find a whistle in the second position. Though I was aware of the possibility to print whistles, I had never tried it myself. After giving it a shot, I was impressed with the print quality, and it produced a surprisingly loud sound.
Although I didn’t measure it, I doubt it hit the claimed 118 dB. Nevertheless, it certainly was attention-grabbing.

A self-watering planter that needs no supports and is watertight
I didn’t expect this older model to print so well
I’ve often seen 3D printed planters but hadn’t attempted one until I decided to print Thingiverse’s fifth most popular design—a self-watering planter. Initially, I was unsure how to orient the model for printing since it came only as an STL file and was last updated in 2018.
During that time, most users had basic printers, which have substantially improved since then. I opted to create my own settings rather than stick to the suggested ones and made minor adjustments for a better fit with modern printers.
I utilized standard settings for my printer, including four walls and five bottom shell layers. The final product was watertight and functioned perfectly.

Everyone needs a reliable headphone stand
I didn’t anticipate this model’s popularity
Having recently acquired a pair of Bose headphones, I found myself in need of a good storage solution, which led me to the eighth most popular model on Thingiverse—a headphone stand. The design is simple yet aesthetically pleasing. As with previous models, I printed using default settings on my Bambu Lab P2S printer.
Upon returning, I was thrilled with how the print turned out. It was properly oriented and printed without the need for supports, aligning perfectly with my expectations.

A mini octopus serves as a fun fidget toy
No tuning necessary
I typically focus on practical 3D prints, but I decided to try a playful design—a flexible mini octopus. It was delightful to discover that it ranked as one of the top models on Thingiverse. The print was seamless with no adjustments needed; I used standard settings and a roll of matte PLA filament.
Just a few hours later, the octopus was ready. It came off the bed effortlessly, with all tentacles perfectly articulated. My family and I have enjoyed this little toy immensely.

It’s a classic for good reason
Anyone familiar with 3D printing likely knows about the Benchy—originally created as a printer calibration test, it’s become a quintessential model. Today, it can be printed in as little as 24 minutes, depending on the printer settings.
This model remains a go-to in the 3D printing community and has even inspired its own board game.
These designs are well-regarded for a reason
With several years of 3D printing experience under my belt, I can attest to the ease with which these popular models print. Each design came out perfectly on the first attempt, contributing significantly to their widespread appeal.
