Otter.ai Secures $320 Million Investment from General Catalyst’s Growth Fund for Innovative Meeting Solutions

Otter.ai, a tool for taking meeting notes, has announced that it secured $320 million in funding from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund (CVF), which aims to support startups while avoiding equity dilution and benefiting from the results of marketing expenditures.
The funds will be allocated towards enhancing enterprise capabilities, refining market strategies, expanding internationally, and driving product innovation.
Having been established nearly a decade ago, Otter.ai has raised a total of $50 million in funding, with the latest round occurring in 2021, as indicated by PitchBook data.
In the past year, Otter achieved a significant financial benchmark by surpassing $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). The company expressed that it is close to reaching new financial milestones but refrained from sharing specific updated figures.
To date, 40 million users have utilized Otter’s services, an increase from 25 million last year. However, in an industry saturated with competitors, maintaining customer retention remains a significant challenge for Otter. The startup did not divulge any information regarding monthly active user counts or churn rates.
“Voice represents one of the most significant untapped potentials in enterprise AI, and Otter is leading the way. Observing Otter’s growth has reinforced this belief,” stated Pranav Singhvi, a Partner and Co-founder of CVF at General Catalyst. “By enabling enterprises to gather essential voice data and convert it into actionable insights, Otter enhances team efficiency, sharpens decision-making, and improves overall organizational productivity, making it a valuable ally for CVF.”
The meeting note-taking market is quite competitive, filled with well-established services like Fireflies.ai, Granola, and Read AI, as well as newcomers such as Calendly, Wispr, and Superhuman, which recently acquired Fathom. Other players in the space include Circleback, Talat, and Quill.
Many of these competitors aim to integrate with enterprise systems and automate workflows based on meeting data. Otter is also moving in this direction, having introduced features like a meeting assistant, cross-application search capabilities, and integrations with various AI tools recently.
In a recent discussion at the HumanX conference, Otter’s new Chief Marketing Officer, Alex Gay, who previously worked with Superhuman, shared that the company recognizes a substantial opportunity in transforming transcripts into actionable plans for those attending back-to-back meetings.
“We’ve identified a significant challenge for individuals in meeting-intensive roles, as they often transition from one conversation to the next. For them, meetings are the essence of their work, whether it’s engaging with clients or strategizing in sales. However, these meetings tend to be inefficient, starting with lengthy recaps to bring everyone up to speed,” he explained.
The company is currently testing ways to provide insights before, during, and after meetings. This includes a feature designed to send users a pre-meeting brief with relevant information and context from previous discussions. Additionally, Otter is exploring a Live Assist feature that will allow participants to pose questions to the AI during the meeting for immediate assistance.
