OpenAI Partners with Getty to Integrate Images into ChatGPT Responses

Getty has previously made a similar agreement with Perplexity AI.

Getty Images has entered into a multi-year agreement with OpenAI, allowing the AI firm to utilize its licensed content libraries. This collaboration will enable Getty’s visual content to be featured in OpenAI’s search and ChatGPT applications.

“The inclusion of high-quality licensed visual content enhances the utility and reliability of AI-driven search and discovery,” said Getty CEO Craig Peters. “This partnership underscores our mutual understanding, and we aim to provide enriched visual experiences to ChatGPT users.”

Until recently, Getty Images had taken a firm stance against collaboration with AI entities. In September 2022, the company prohibited all AI-generated artwork in its library. Later, it filed a lawsuit against Stability AI, claiming copyright infringements—though this claim was dismissed late last year.

One year after banning AI-generated art, Getty introduced its own generative AI tool, developed using its library and powered by NVIDIA’s Edigy AI model, with all resulting images available under a royalty-free license.

In October 2025, Getty signed an agreement with Perplexity AI that permitted access to its library for the latter’s AI search and discovery tools. The arrangement included provisions for better image display, including crediting sources and linking for user education on the legal use of licensed imagery, in light of past legal issues faced by Perplexity regarding copyright violations.

Despite this development, Getty has not disclosed whether its images will be utilized for AI model training, although the agreement with Perplexity explicitly prohibits such use.
