OpenAI Expands Biotech Portfolio with Acquisition of Startup Orchestra Bio

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced its acquisition of Orchestra Bio, a biotech software startup founded four years ago. While the financial details of the deal were not revealed, it is known that Orchestra had previously secured approximately $20 million in funding by 2025 from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC.
Orchestra specializes in developing AI tools that assist biotech firms with various aspects of drug discovery, including financial tracking and scheduling for clinical trials.
With this acquisition, OpenAI plans to integrate Orchestra’s technology and team into its initiatives for Rosalind, an AI model designed for life sciences research, as well as its Rosalind Workbench tool, which aims to facilitate experimental planning and result analysis for researchers. OpenAI has already attracted prominent clients for Rosalind, including Moderna and Novo Nordisk.
This acquisition highlights a trend among top AI organizations, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, as they expand their software offerings to major sectors like pharmaceuticals. There is a prevailing anxiety in the startup community that major labs could suddenly introduce competing features. In this instance, however, Orchestra will be integrated into OpenAI rather than eliminated.
