Netflix Unveils Retro VHS-Style Edition of Stranger Things Season One

Netflix finds another way to capitalize on the success of Stranger Things.
Stranger Things may have concluded, but Netflix continues to explore new ways to engage its fans. The platform has unveiled a special “VHS” edition of the show’s initial season, encouraging viewers to “Rewatch Season 1 like it’s 1983.” This new version mimics the look and feel of VHS tapes.
The presentation features a 4:3 aspect ratio typical of older televisions, resulting in sizable black borders on either side unless viewed on a CRT screen. The visuals carry a grainy, soft-focus quality that may evoke nostalgia for those who remember renting tapes from local stores.
The Duffer brothers, creators of the show, stated, “If Stranger Things were to sit on a shelf at Family Video in Hawkins, it would look just like this — featuring pan-and-scan.” This technique involves cropping the sides of a widescreen image to fit smaller displays, coupled with a camera movement that follows action occurring near the edges.
Even the opening animation from Netflix has been modified to exude a vintage feel, although the audio remains unchanged. The Duffer brothers hinted that they might consider releasing VHS versions of the subsequent seasons if the first one garners enough views. This will determine if Netflix’s nostalgic approach leads to further VHS special editions down the line. To experience it, viewers can either visit the dedicated landing page or search “Stranger Things VHS” on Netflix.
