Meta Ventures into VR Glasses Once More, This Time with Enhanced IMAX Features
Meta is making significant strides in the virtual reality space once again. During the Connect event on Wednesday, the company introduced the Meta VR Glasses, which are aimed at providing a more convenient and immersive VR experience. These glasses are notably lighter and feature numerous entertainment enhancements, including what is said to be IMAX compatibility.
According to Meta, these glasses are five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, boasting a design that resembles standard eyeglasses rather than the cumbersome headsets from previous releases. Crafted with a magnesium alloy, they run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor. The glasses utilize a compact computing puck that also serves as their battery, allowing users to easily carry it in a pocket for mobile usage.
Tailored primarily for entertainment, the glasses are equipped with micro-OLED panels that deliver a stunning 5K Infinite Display, offering 37 pixels per degree. They also provide Dolby Vision capabilities along with Dolby Atmos audio support, enabling users to download and enjoy films seamlessly.
A standout feature of these glasses is Meta’s emphasis on their capability to enhance the IMAX film experience. The company describes them as the “first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device ever,” highlighting that they will allow viewers to enjoy a unique high-resolution viewing experience defined by an extended aspect ratio.
The glasses are designed for compatibility with 3D content, including movies that integrate the user’s physical environment into the viewing experience. In collaboration with Disney, Meta has announced that from November, Disney+ subscribers will have access to stream selected movies, including certain titles from the Marvel franchise, in 3D.
Meta promises that viewers will be able to experience films in a transformative manner, with their surroundings enhanced by immersive environments, dynamic effects, impressive 3D visuals, and spatial audio—essentially turning watching a movie into a VR gaming-like encounter.
Moreover, the glasses will feature Meta AI, an integrated virtual assistant that allows users to engage with the device through voice commands, making it possible to start a movie simply by asking. Additionally, users can control various functions using hand gestures.
Meta plans to release the glasses in the coming spring, with a starting price set at $1299.99.
