Meta Temporarily Revises Restrictions on Conversation Focus for Its Smart Glasses

A representative indicated that the company is evaluating various options moving forward.

For users of Meta’s augmented reality glasses, now is the time to utilize the Conversation Focus feature, as the company has decided to temporarily lift its usage limits. Initially reported by an industry source, Meta has halted its subscription testing for this feature, which enhances the voices of individuals during conversations by utilizing the glasses’ built-in speakers. Meta spokesperson Tyler Yee confirmed, “We listened to the feedback and are pausing the subscription tests for now,” adding that “Conversation Focus will remain free through our Early Access Program for those testing it as we develop a better strategy.”

Previously, Meta had implemented usage restrictions on the Conversation Focus feature. Users could access it for free for up to three hours monthly, after which they would be expected to upgrade to a $20-a-month Meta One Premium Plan, which still capped use at 15 hours per month. The rationale behind the introduction of these limits remains unclear, especially since it has been established that the feature operates offline, without requiring an internet connection.

While Meta has opted to keep the Conversation Focus feature free for the time being, the long-term outlook remains uncertain. According to Yee, the company aims “to ensure we get it right” regarding the feature and is “still looking at all available options for the best direction.” Furthermore, the spokesperson mentioned that “some premium features may eventually be subscription-based,” suggesting that monetizing certain functionalities could assist Meta in maintaining lower hardware prices.
