In recent years, 3D printing has gained significant traction as a widely accessible method for producing physical items, appealing even to novices. Now, a new wave of DIY methods, particularly CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling, is making its mark. Thanks to more affordable options and user-friendly computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software, desktop CNC machines are becoming popular. These compact devices allow users to work with various materials, including metals, wood, and plastics.
We had the opportunity to test one such desktop CNC machine, enabling us to craft a figurine without engaging in any CAD design. The InfiMaker K1 stands out for its ability to use AI technology to create 3D models from 2D images, which the developers say is one of its greatest features.
One of the hurdles with desktop CNC machines has been the complex commercial software used for multi-axis milling. The K1 not only simplifies file conversion but also supports common 3D file formats, including STL, STEP, and OBJ.
The InfiMaker K1 boasts 5-axis cutting capability. This means it can cut from three standard axes while also rotating or tilting the workpiece. The machine supports angles ranging from -30° to +110°. Additionally, it features an automatic tool changer that accommodates five tools and includes a ruby centering probe.
The spindle is rated at 1.5 kW and can reach speeds of up to 20,000 RPM. According to InfiMaker, it can achieve precision to a tolerance of 0.01 millimeters.
The machine is capable of processing a wide range of materials, such as acrylic, aluminum, brass, composites, copper, various plastics, jade, resin, steel, titanium, wax, and wood.

InfiMaker recently announced the launch of its Kickstarter campaign for this innovative CNC mill. Early backers can secure the machine for only $5,199, which represents a 40% discount from the anticipated retail price of $8,599.
Additional funding tiers are available, offering perks such as a water-cooling system, a set of vice jaws, and a wireless jog handwheel.
