I’ve Abandoned Google for 90% of My Searches—Here’s My Go-To Alternatives

By Megan Ellis
Google remains the leading search engine largely due to its extensive site indexing and efficient search tools. However, many users feel that Google’s search could once be considered superior overall.
Having relied on Google for years, I found myself using it less frequently as I discovered a more satisfying alternative: Brave Search.

Quality of Google Search Declines
By Joe Maring
Over the years, Google Search has struggled to maintain its quality. Genuine results are often replaced with paid advertisements, and the shopping section is cluttered with irrelevant items, making it tedious to locate what you need.
Despite my frustrations, I hesitated to switch from Google, believing its expansive indexing was unmatched. However, seeing competitors like Bing fail only added to my hesitation.
Increased ads and unnecessary features hinder access to the results you truly require.
The introduction of AI-generated summaries was the tipping point. They cluttered the search experience and were often misleading, making it challenging to find accurate information.
Many times, the AI overviews would include fictitious details. While searching for specific information about MagicOS settings, I found many irrelevant or misleading links; this trend led me to lose faith in Google as it continued to push AI features.
Switching to Brave Search Enhanced My Experience

Initially, I hadn’t intended to look for alternatives to Google. Yet, my growing dissatisfaction led me to explore options when I changed browsers.
I began by switching from Chrome, marking a step towards reducing my Google reliance, eventually adopting Brave for both mobile and PC.
As my dissatisfaction with Google grew, I found myself effortlessly transitioning to Brave Search, which proved surprisingly effective despite being developed by a smaller company.
Brave Search offers genuinely useful results without the clutter of ads and SEO issues that often plague Google.
The significant appeal of Brave came from its lack of ads. Its independent indexing promised a more focused search. I appreciated being able to disable AI summaries, unlike with Google; this feature often outperformed Google’s results.
Curiously, I noted that even with AI summaries activated during my app installation, the results were generally more accurate and helpful compared to Google. I still verify sources, but this feature provides a quick way to track down reliable information.

Without the clutter of sponsored links, finding relevant results became easier. When searching for products on specific sites, Brave provided direct links without unnecessary distractions.
Even though I previously counted on Google for news, its promotional tactics made this increasingly frustrating. For instance, a search about a corruption commission would yield less relevant links, while Brave provided focused results related to the matter.
Brave Search still allows for valuable widgets such as weather and currency conversions. While not as extensive as Google’s offerings, the essential tools are present without constant advertisements.
Still Occasionally Relying on Google
By Joe Maring
Although I prefer Brave, it isn’t without its challenges. I sometimes find it deficient in local listings, which is when I reluctantly revert to Google.
I also occasionally use Google for shopping objectives. Its results may be flawed with irrelevant products, but it can still serve as a starting point to identify potential retailers for certain items.
After grasping which sites offer the products, I turn away from Google, as its shopping features are laden with paid options that don’t align with my search intent.
I only use Google for local searches and some shopping needs, but each use reminds me why I departed from it.
After determining which sites carry specific items, I shift back to Brave, since its offerings are more relevant. Nonetheless, Brave sometimes struggles to provide listings available in my region, especially for South African users.
Despite its regional limitations, every Google search reinforces my decision to switch. Brave Search continues to evolve and improve, enhancing my overall search experience.
