iFixit Dissects Galaxy Z Fold 8: Major Repair Issues Uncovered

Summary

  • iFixit awarded the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 a low repairability score of 4 out of 10, citing a highly fragile inner display, a sensitive hinge, and subpar dust resistance.
  • Highlights include the use of standard screws, removable USB-C ports, and an 8.8% improvement in battery technology. However, one battery installation puts the outer display at risk during access.
  • Repairing the combined inner screen and hinge assemblies necessitates a complete disassembly of the device, compounded by a lack of available official spare parts.

Samsung’s newest foldable device may appear to be a technological marvel, but beneath its sleek design lies a story of limited repair options. Although our initial experience with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 was positive, the detailed teardown performed by iFixit highlights the significant repair challenges that come with ultra-slim foldable devices.

iFixit rated the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with a mere 4 out of 10 for its repairability, largely due to the vulnerability of the inner display, a complex hinge mechanism, and a dust resistance rating that falls short of practical use.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 does gain some points for its use of standard Phillips and JIS screws, and the inclusion of a modular USB-C port which isn’t soldered to the main circuit board. Furthermore, it features new silicon-carbon battery technology, providing an 8.8% increase in battery capacity over its predecessor. However, gaining access to one of the dual batteries involves removing the fragile outer screen, risking damage to a costly component to access a replaceable part.

The true difficulties arise if repair is ever required for the inner display or hinge. During iFixit’s examination, the plastic frame surrounding the inner screen was damaged, resulting in the destruction of the fragile foldable OLED.

Additionally, the device’s IP4X rating does not safeguard against dust or fine particles. When tested with dirt and sand, the hinge produced sounds reminiscent of “chewing gravel,” a concern highlighted during various durability tests.

Since Samsung typically integrates the inner display and hinge into a single assembly, repairing either component likely means disassembling the entire device, making DIY repairs virtually impossible. Furthermore, iFixit notes that replacement parts for the previous model remain limited, casting doubt on the availability of parts for the Fold 8. Buyers planning to keep this device long-term should consider their repair prospects carefully.
