I Gave the Xiaomi 18 Fold a Spin, and Samsung and Apple Might Want to Take Note
Xiaomi recently showcased its innovative foldable device, the Xiaomi 18 Fold, at IFA 2026. After a brief interaction with the device, it became evident why it poses a competitive challenge to established players like Samsung.
This release marks Xiaomi’s first wide-screen foldable within its flagship line, arriving shortly after Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 and ahead of Apple’s anticipated folding iPhone. Unlike its counterparts, the Xiaomi 18 Fold features a distinct rounded design when unfolded and incorporates a robust camera system within its sleek frame.
During my limited hands-on time with the phone at the expo, it became clear that if Xiaomi expands the availability of the 18 Fold globally, Samsung should certainly take notice.
Impressive Design
The Xiaomi 18 Fold’s design stands out, particularly when compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8. Its closed form resembles a passport, yet Xiaomi has rounded the corners on one side, giving it a softer aesthetic. Upon unfolding, this rounded design enhances its approachable look compared to Samsung’s angular device.
Visually, the model I handled featured a striking red finish, complemented by a deep cherry-red back and matching metallic trim. While the phone will also be available in black and white, the red variant certainly catches the eye.
Its exterior display measures 5.38 inches, while the internal screen boasts 7.58 inches. The inner display’s 2:1 aspect ratio aims to facilitate a more user-friendly experience.
Though my time with the device was limited, the basic user experience seemed promising, although I could not thoroughly evaluate factors such as brightness or visibility in direct sunlight.
Camera Features Shine
Focusing on the camera capabilities, the Xiaomi 18 Fold seems to have an edge over its competitor. It boasts a triple-camera array at the rear, featuring a 200MP main sensor alongside 50MP ultrawide and telephoto cameras. The integration of Leica branding further adds to its appeal. It offers a focal range of 17-80mm and potential for impressive 100x digital zoom.

The camera app is intuitively designed to utilize the larger inner display, with a central viewfinder surrounded by controls, enabling smoother adjustments—especially with a tactile wheel for zooming.
Performance Powerhouse
The Xiaomi 18 Fold isn’t just about its aesthetic or camera prowess. It’s powered by the new in-house XRing 03 processor, coupled with next-gen LPDDR6 RAM capable of reaching speeds of up to 12,800 Mbps. This move reflects Xiaomi’s ambition to control more of its technology stack.
Although I couldn’t fully assess the performance of the XRing O3 during my brief interaction, the device felt inherently responsive and swift, fitting for a flagship model in 2026.
Market Availability Concerns
Xiaomi’s timing for unveiling a wide-screen foldable is certainly strategic, especially with competitors following similar paths. The HUAWEI Pura X Max also pioneered this passport-style format, setting the bar for others.
However, as of now, Xiaomi has not confirmed plans for a global launch for the 18 Fold. It has been released in China, and it would be a missed opportunity if it doesn’t expand internationally. Overall, my initial impressions of the Xiaomi 18 Fold were overwhelmingly positive.
