Quick Summary

  • Google has officially launched games on Android Auto and Android Automotive OS, moving them out of beta and making them widely available.
  • Users can enjoy a selection of games on their car’s display while parked. Developers are now able to publish compatible games via Google Play’s testing and production channels.
  • Due to safety precautions, gaming is restricted while the vehicle is in motion.

If you’ve ever found yourself idle in your vehicle, Google is significantly expanding your entertainment choices. In addition to integrating video streaming platforms, the tech giant is elevating in-car gaming this year.

The games category for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS has transitioned from beta to general availability. This update signifies that games are no longer restricted to early access, allowing developers to publish compatible titles without limitations on Google Play.

However, users can only engage with these games when the vehicle is stationary. Google emphasizes that the feature is intended for situations where you’re within your car but not actively driving, such as waiting for a recharge or in a parking lot.

Furthermore, games are designed to mute their audio when driving starts, and this audio cannot simply be resumed while the vehicle is moving.

The games will run directly on the vehicle’s display, eliminating the need to use your smartphone. Car screens will support touch controls, with some titles also allowing compatibility with external game controllers.

To utilize in-car games on Android Auto, devices must operate on Android 15 or newer. Each game must meet certain standards and support the car’s display requirements before being made available on the platform.

Google additionally emphasizes the need for developers to ensure their games can resume from the last played state. This means that if you exit a game and return later, it should ideally continue from where you left off.

Moreover, the company encourages developers to adapt their games to function well across different car displays, given the variety in screen types across vehicles.
