Figma Unveils Innovative Features to Revolutionize Agent Operations on Its Platform

Figma has unveiled a new Markdown-based editor designed to refine a company’s design framework, integrate design and code libraries, and connect with the Payload headless content management system, during its inaugural Config event held in India. This initiative aims to standardize adherence to brand design guidelines for both internal teams and external collaborators utilizing AI.

The highlight of the event was the introduction of Figma Specs, a Markdown editor allowing users to articulate their design language easily. This document serves as an essential guide for teams during the design process in Figma. Specs can be utilized as a separate file or incorporated directly within the canvas. In addition to text editing, users have the ability to reference elements from Figma, including canvas components and FigJam diagrams, as well as code layers and designs.

Moreover, teams can enrich the design context by incorporating design libraries, code resources, and rules to oversee their design systems effectively. Agents can tap into this centralized repository to comply with established guidelines.

In addition, Figma expanded its canvas agent accessibility to a broader audience this week. Acknowledging the unpredictable nature of AI, the company aims to equip users with tools that guide AI towards more consistent outputs.

The firm also introduced the code layers functionality, which integrates coding capabilities into designs on the canvas, enhancing the interactivity of prototypes. Previously available in a private beta since June, this feature is now accessible in public beta, allowing more users to experiment with it. Users can request the agent to convert designs into code or modify existing code to refine prototypes.

Figma’s chief design officer, Loredana Crisan, shared insights on the evolving landscape, stating, “Figma represents the arena where software teams determine their creation and delivery strategy. AI has unlocked new avenues for building, leading to a 17-fold increase in code production compared to previous years. Yet, the rise in releases is a modest 1.3 times, suggesting much of this code is exploratory rather than production-ready.”

Additionally, Figma announced support for over 20 new tools through its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Sarvam, an AI startup from India.

Last year, Figma acquired the open-source headless CMS Payload, which is now being integrated with the Figma Make product for dynamic website creation and content management. The company reported a sixfold increase in Payload downloads over the past year.

Figma has also established its first office in India, which focuses on sales, partnerships, market strategies, and product support. The company identifies India as its largest user base outside the United States, collaborating with 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
