F1’s 50-Year-Old Ban on a Fan Car: A $1.3M Behemoth Demonstrates the Rationale Behind It

In 1978, the Brabham Formula 1 team surprised everyone at the Swedish Grand Prix with an innovative car featuring a large fan attached to its rear. This fan functioned by sucking air from beneath the BT46B, generating significant downforce while minimizing any drag associated with traditional wings.

The legendary driver Niki Lauda clinched victory in the race with this fan-equipped car. However, competing teams, particularly Lotus, quickly lodged protests against this unconventional design, claiming it hurled debris towards other racers. Facing mounting pressure and threats of a boycott from other teams, Brabham decided to withdraw the BT46B. Shortly thereafter, the FIA placed a ban on fan-assisted downforce devices, marking the end of such innovations in Formula 1.

Fast forward almost fifty years, McMurtry Automotive, a UK-based company co-founded in 2016 by the late engineering visionary Sir David McMurtry and former Formula 1 engineer Thomas Yates, is reintroducing the fan concept—with a modern twist. Their new Spéirling PURE is a refined version of the initial prototype, which has already set records at both the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Top Gear test track. The car is set to have its world premiere at The Quail in Monterey, California, on August 14.

While Brabham’s fan car lasted just one race before being outlawed, McMurtry has taken the concept that was prematurely halted decades ago and transformed it into a fully-functional hyper-track vehicle based on customer feedback.

From Prototype to Production

Almost Every Component is New

According to McMurtry, the production version of the Spéirling PURE consists of 95% new parts in comparison to the prototypes that achieved record times at previous events.

The most notable upgrade is in the battery, which has increased in capacity from 60 kWh in the prototypes to 100 kWh in the production model. This enhancement utilizes Molicel P50B NCA 21700 cells, thereby extending the duration the car can operate on a single charge. The regenerative braking can now recover up to 200 kW at any state of charge, supported by updated Helix drive motors and an improved gearbox for enhanced torque.

The powertrain cooling system has been moved from the rear to the front of the Spéirling PURE, improving both efficiency and aerodynamics, even as the car’s dimensions have slightly increased to accommodate the larger battery (with the wheelbase expanding from 78.7 to 86.6 inches).

A new carbon fiber monocoque has been developed to comply with global motorsport safety standards. This structure provides additional elbow and legroom, a wider door opening, and a repositioned A-pillar to offer better visibility. The secondary door is now more accessible, featuring wider hinges for easier entry and exit.

The Fan System That Enhances Grip

Downforce, Even When Stationary

McMurtry has coined its fan-assisted concept as “Downforce-on-Demand.” The fans situated at the rear draw air from beneath the car, while a specialized skirt around the car’s perimeter seals off the low-pressure area against the ground, generating up to 4,400 lbs. of downforce effectively from a standstill, well before the vehicle achieves speeds suitable for traditional wings or diffusers.

For the Spéirling PURE, the fan blades have been re-engineered for added durability, and the motors have been repositioned for a better center of gravity. The skirt system now includes an onboard air compressor, eliminating the need for an external air bottle to activate the system. Furthermore, the skirt can retract automatically when loading onto a trailer or when navigating through pit areas.

An updated swan-neck rear wing features storage space beneath it for a helmet and a HANS device, which is essential for driver safety during crashes. Additional safety features include headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights for track days.

1,000 Horsepower and 3G Cornering Capabilities

Steering Enhancements for Improved Feedback

The Spéirling PURE boasts an impressive 1,000 horsepower, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.55 seconds (with a one-foot rollout) and achieve a top speed of 190 mph. This power is provided by a twin-motor, rear-wheel-drive system with an electronic differential, all packaged in a vehicle weighing roughly 2,980 lbs., depending on selected options. The car can generate cornering and braking forces of up to 3g, a feat usually associated with prototype GT race cars and Formula 1 vehicles.

In a move to enhance driver control, McMurtry has replaced the electric power steering with a hydraulic system featuring Formula 1-style valving, aimed at offering a lighter steering feel and better driver feedback. The suspension travel has been extended, and ride height has been increased by 20% during suspension use. Wider tires have also been introduced, with an 11% increase at the front and a 3% increase at the rear, accompanied by taller sidewalls for improved ride comfort over rough surfaces.

The Spéirling PURE is designed to operate for a range of 25 to 31 miles at the pace of an LMP2 race car before requiring a recharge. McMurtry claims that charging from 20% to 95% takes between 20 minutes to one hour, depending on the charger used and ambient conditions.

Production Details and Initial Reveal

Production will be limited to just 100 units of the Spéirling PURE, with prices starting at £995,000 (approximately $1.3 million) before any additional options, taxes, or shipping costs. Deliveries to the first customers are scheduled to commence later in 2026.

The Spéirling PURE will have its public debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, on August 14, coinciding with the unveiling of Hennessey’s new Blackbird hypercar. Subsequently, it will appear at Laguna Seca Raceway for the Monterey Motorsports Reunion on August 15, followed by visits to McMurtry dealers and various tracks throughout the United States.

The aim is for a skilled driver and technician to manage the Spéirling PURE together, although full factory support will be available for owners if desired. The car is authorized for participation in GT1 Sports Club events, Global Time Attack in the U.S., and European Time Attack Masters events, including at the Nürburgring GP circuit.
