Ex-Comet Team Member at Perplexity Unveils AI Browser Designed for Knowledge Workers

In 2025, AI-integrated browsers became extremely popular. Various companies aimed to create browsers that incorporated artificial intelligence to dominate the way users navigate the internet.

Fast forward to today, and the landscape has dramatically changed. OpenAI’s Atlas is now defunct, and The Browser Company has been acquired by Atlassian, pivoting its Dia browser to concentrate on productivity solutions. Meanwhile, Firefox’s attempts to incorporate AI while providing an option to disable it faced backlash.

This year, the trend has shifted towards automation and agent-based browsing. New ventures like Strawberry, Browser Use, and Aside are designing browsers with an emphasis on agent capabilities, while Perplexity’s Comet is also heading in the direction of providing browser agents.

In this evolving environment, a startup named Polar has introduced an AI-centric browser tailored for knowledge workers, successfully raising a $5.7 million seed funding round led by Madrona.

Kevin Jiang, the CEO of Polar and a former member of the Perplexity team behind Comet, commented that the initial AI browsers sought to revolutionize search by enabling users to interact with tabs for tasks like travel arrangements, a strategy that proved unsustainable over the long term.

“Consider the average consumer; they don’t book flights or make reservations on a frequent basis. The demand for an AI browser from the mass consumer market isn’t strong. Our focus is precisely on knowledge work, where we believe browser agents provide real value,” Jiang expressed in an interview.

Polar allows users to manage workflows, store prompts, and delegate tasks to agents according to their active tabs. The company highlights that even those who aren’t particularly tech-savvy can navigate the browser effectively, aiding in domains like sales, recruitment, marketing, research, and general operations.

The browser is available for free, granting users a limited number of daily credits for AI-related tasks. For those desiring higher credit thresholds, subscription options start at $20 per month.

Currently, many users utilize Polar primarily for task automation alongside another browser for everyday use. The startup aspires to become a go-to automation tool, believing that browsers currently provide the best platform for such functionality, but remains open to other possibilities, including broader computer usage.

Sabrina Albert, a partner at Madrona, commented on the substantial market for automating knowledge work tasks.

“The challenge lies in developing reliable agent-based tools on the open, logged-in web. Constructing a web browser presents unique advantages in understanding how users engage with various websites. Plus, being logged into these platforms allows tools access to services frequently used by individuals,” she noted during a conversation.

The funding round also included participation from several notable individuals, such as former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke, Phia founder Phoebe Gates, Modal CEO Erik Bernhardsson, Flapping Airplanes co-founder Benjamin Spector, Etched co-founder Rob Wachen, and Fundamental Research Labs founder and CEO Robert Yang.
