Many individuals default to built-in apps for their calendar, messaging, and clock. However, numerous third-party applications offer superior functionality, and Chrono stands out among them.
While not widely recognized, Chrono is an open-source clock application that surpasses the standard offerings from both Samsung and Google. It features an appealing user interface, a variety of beneficial alarm options, and operates without ads. Its lower profile can be attributed to its unavailability on the official app store.
In this article, I’ll detail the reasons to try Chrono, provide installation instructions, and explain how to keep the app updated.
Why Chrono is Worth Your Attention
Chrono is one of my first downloads whenever I set up a new device. Although I previously relied heavily on Google’s Clock app, Chrono quickly won me over for various reasons.
The user interface of Chrono is similar to other major clock apps, providing direct access to alarms with tabs for Alarm, World Clock, Timer, and Stopwatch. While it maintains familiarity, it allows extensive customization options, including a dark mode and a Google-inspired design style.
What I appreciate is the flexibility in customizing the appearance of Chrono, unlike other apps which tend to restrict customization and emphasize basic functionality.
Although it can be challenging to differentiate clock applications, Chrono has successfully carved its niche.
Chrono also incorporates small yet pleasant visual elements, such as icons representing day, night, or evening next to alarms, adding a subtle splash of color. Additionally, the app allows users to tag alarms for easier organization.
Its standout feature, however, is the intensity of its alarm functions. Users can set tasks that must be completed before an alarm can be turned off, such as completing a brief challenge or retracing a short phrase.
With snooze durations that range from one to thirty minutes and the ability to lock alarms to prevent easy dismissal, Chrono proves effective even for the heaviest sleepers.
Ultimately, while not every clock app is unique, users who enjoy customization and struggle with waking up to traditional alarms will find Chrono to be a valuable addition.
Even my daughter, who typically has difficulty waking up, has found success with Chrono, simplifying my morning routine significantly.
How to Download and Install Chrono
Chrono can be downloaded in two ways, both of which bypass the official app store. Below are the straightforward steps if you don’t have F-Droid installed:
- Visit the Chrono page on F-Droid.
- Scroll to the bottom and click the Download button.
- Follow the provided instructions to sideload the app.
- Installation may require additional steps based on your device.
- Once the app is installed, use a third-party tool to ensure it stays updated.
Maintaining App Updates
Updating apps through the Google Play Store is straightforward, while Chrono requires a different approach. For users of F-Droid, maintaining updates can be just as simple, as the app includes an automatic updates section, if enabled.
To confirm this feature is enabled, navigate to Settings in the main menu. Ensure the Automatically install updates option is active, and adjust the frequency of checks as needed.
If you installed the app directly instead of using F-Droid, you’ll need to check for updates manually or utilize a sideload manager to track updates.
