Cloudflare Enhances Its Workers Framework with Deno Acquisition

On Friday, Cloudflare announced its decision to acquire Deno, the startup responsible for the programming runtime of the same name.

Kenton Varda, a principal engineer at Cloudflare, stated that this acquisition will enhance the company’s Workers programming model and platform, which enables clients to develop and execute software on Cloudflare’s infrastructure.

Deno, co-founded by Bert Belder and Ryan Dahl, the creator of Node.js, recently introduced celld, an open-source version of Workers, which Varda noted was met with enthusiasm by the Cloudflare team. He emphasized that, contrary to the belief that the firm designed Cloudflare Workers to create dependency with other cloud platforms, the company values open source and providing users with alternatives as beneficial for business.

Ryan Dahl expressed that his team is excited to join Cloudflare and aims to make the Workers programming model a widely accepted approach to server development.

The financial details surrounding the acquisition remain confidential. Deno has previously secured $26 million in funding, including a Series A round led by Sequoia.
