Is this simply a rebranded Windows Recall?
The functionality bears a resemblance to Microsoft’s previously criticized Windows Recall tool. When Windows Recall was introduced, it faced significant backlash and was postponed due to security concerns, yet there are key differences.
The primary distinction is that Computer History is an opt-in feature, unlike Windows Recall, which was initially set to activate automatically. While Windows Recall constantly captures screenshots of user actions, OpenAI specifies that its feature only tracks interaction events via operating-system activity and does not record screen or audio data. Moreover, users can select which apps and websites will contribute to these interactions.
However, the Computer History feature does come with potential risks. OpenAI has cautioned that it might contain sensitive data, and this information will not be encrypted, making it possibly accessible to other applications on your computer.
Availability
If you’re comfortable with giving AI access to your computer activities, you may want to explore this feature. Computer History will be available for desktop Mac users subscribing to ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. However, it will not be accessible in all regions, specifically excluding users in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area (EEA). This new capability will replace the Chronicle research preview, according to OpenAI.
