Challenged Hedge Fund Situational Awareness Dives into Chip Innovation with $400M into Source Foundry

Situational Awareness may have downsized its public investments last month, but the AI-centered hedge fund is still pursuing significant opportunities.

Recently, the fund committed $400 million to Source Foundry, a startup established by researchers from Stanford, focused on streamlining chip production processes. This latest investment raises their total stake in the company to $500 million.

Founded by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former researcher at OpenAI, Situational Awareness emerged in 2024 despite his lack of trading experience at the time. Initially, the fund saw promising returns, but it has recently encountered substantial losses as AI infrastructure stocks have declined.

By the end of July, Situational Awareness divested a significant portion of its public investments to Citadel, the hedge fund led by Ken Griffin, yet chose to retain its shares in Anthropic. The fund’s assets under management have reportedly dropped from $20 billion to $10 billion.

However, Aschenbrenner remained focused on his personal life, not allowing these challenges to interfere with his wedding plans.
