Breaking: ChatGPT Plus Users Face Frustrating Restrictions Again

Quick Summary
- OpenAI is reinstating a five-hour usage cap for ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus subscribers.
- This decision will allow OpenAI to manage its resources while maintaining substantial weekly allowances.
- These five-hour limits will not apply to ChatGPT Pro users.
If you’re utilizing ChatGPT Work and Codex, you may need to adjust your usage pace. After initially lifting the five-hour limits with the introduction of GPT-5.6, OpenAI is now reintroducing these restrictions.
Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s head of Codex and ChatGPT, shared via a post on X that the five-hour limitations for ChatGPT Plus subscribers will come back into effect on August 25.
Sottiaux explained that the restoration of these limits aims to help OpenAI better allocate its computational resources while still offering “generous” weekly usage. For ChatGPT Plus users, this means they will have to use their weekly allocation in five-hour increments before they can reset and access the remainder of their usage.
According to Sottiaux, the “Plus” plan is primarily used by casual and novice users who might unintentionally exceed their weekly limits, leading to confusion. He believes that implementing five-hour limits will assist these users in tracking their weekly usage more effectively.
Currently, these five-hour limits only affect ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Users subscribed to the $200 or $100 Pro plans will not be subject to this restriction and will continue to have weekly limits. However, it’s noteworthy that Sottiaux mentioned that these five-hour restrictions could potentially be extended to Pro users in the upcoming months.
