Bluesky, a social networking platform, reported a significant disruption that lasted for an entire day, attributing the issue to a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. This attack inundated the site with excessive traffic, leading to the outage. The confirmation of the incident came in a post shared on Monday, detailing that the attack had occurred within the last 24 hours.
In their announcement, Bluesky stated, “We have enhanced our defense mechanisms as a precaution and are keeping a close watch on the situation.” They refrained from providing further specifics regarding the attack.
A representative for Bluesky did not immediately provide answers to inquiries regarding the incident.
DDoS attacks typically involve bombarding a website or server with vast amounts of invalid traffic to overwhelm its resources and take it offline. These attacks often leverage a multitude of compromised internet-connected devices, usually grouped into networks like botnets, to exploit their unused bandwidth to target web servers.
In discussions on the IFIN public forum, security experts indicated that attackers with ties to Iran have taken responsibility for this event. They noted an uptick in such attacks on U.S. entities and critical infrastructures since the escalation of the conflict led by the U.S. and Israel earlier this year.
This incident marks another substantial DDoS attack against Bluesky within recent months, following a series of disruptions caused by a similar influx of traffic back in April. The relationship between the two attacks remains unclear.
