Aptoide Makes History as the First Competing App Store to Rejoin Google Play in the US

U.S. users can once again find competing Android app stores on Google Play, with Aptoide leading the charge. This Portugal-based app distributor reintroduced its game store to Google Play this Monday after a lengthy absence, citing recent relaxation of rules previously viewed as stifling competition.
This marks a significant moment in the app market, as it allows U.S. users to directly access an alternative to Google’s Android app store for the first time in years, potentially fostering greater competition in the sector.
Aptoide is among the largest independent Android app marketplaces outside of Google Play, boasting a collection of over 40,000 applications and serving approximately 25 million active users each month. The United States has represented Aptoide’s largest user base, but previously, the platform could only be accessed by sideloading it onto devices, which limited its accessibility.
The landscape shifted due to a ruling by U.S. District Judge James Donato in the Epic Games case, which stipulated that Google must permit the installation of third-party applications from outside the Play Store. Beginning June 22, 2026, Google allowed independent app stores to access its app catalog through the Play Catalog Access Program. This enables these rivals to utilize Google Play’s resources, including the catalog, while maintaining their independence as stores.
Epic Games initiated legal action against Google in 2020, claiming that the company engaged in unfair practices within the Android app ecosystem. A jury ruled in favor of Epic in 2023. Although Google attempted to appeal, it was unsuccessful. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to eliminate Play Store commissions and facilitate alternative app store installations for Android users.
