Apple Prohibits Home Service Advertisements in Future Maps Updates

Apple is set to enhance its advertising strategy within Apple Maps by concentrating on local enterprises and attractions, as indicated by its newly released advertising guidelines. While the company disclosed intentions to launch ads in the Maps app come March 2026, it hasn’t specified a precise release date beyond this summer in the US and Canada. These updated regulations hint that Apple Maps ads could differ significantly from those offered by competing platforms.

The newly established ad guidelines mirror several of Apple’s App Review policies, with restrictions on content deemed harmful or inappropriate. Apple’s stipulations ban advertisements that contain defamatory language or promote illicit activities, while also excluding misleading or drug-related promotions and political content. Among the distinct prohibitions is the exclusion of advertisements for “home services.”

Apple explicitly states, “Ad content that contains or directly or indirectly promotes home services — including but not limited to plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing, or general contracting services — is prohibited.”

Unlike other mapping services where ads for local plumbers or electricians frequently appear, Apple appears to be curating a different experience for its users. The company suggests this approach on its Ads in Apple Maps landing page, positioning the service as a tool for both exploration and navigation:

Users depend on Apple Maps to discover new locations and experiences. Whether it’s identifying coffee shops, restaurants, or local landmarks, Maps is where the inquiry “what’s around here?” evolves into “I’m on my way.” Local businesses will soon be able to advertise on Apple Maps — precisely where potential customers are making their decisions.

Advertising pest control services is certainly less appealing than promoting a cozy coffee shop, which could explain Apple’s initial focus on more inviting advertisements. Reserving ad placements for local businesses, attractions, and cultural sites might also help mitigate any negative perception associated with the fact that ad space is being sold. The company’s decision to exclude ads for bail bonds and cryptocurrency ATMs aligns with this philosophy. However, one solution to avoid unwanted scrutiny altogether would be to refrain from advertising in Apple Maps completely.

Advertising is becoming an integral part of Apple’s expanding “Services” division, which encompasses subscriptions alongside platform fees for in-app transactions and ad sales. Beyond the upcoming integration of ads in Apple Maps, the company already provides advertising options in Apple News, although the quality of those ads has been noted as lacking. Furthermore, Apple made significant enhancements to its App Store advertising in 2022, broadening its scope beyond just search results to include app pages and the App Store home screen. For the time being, Apple seems to be adopting a more conservative advertising strategy for Maps.
