Apple Develops Effortless Copy-Paste Functionality for iPhones and Windows PCs
The firm aims to complete its project by the autumn of 2027.
Apple’s universal clipboard feature allows easy copying and pasting between its devices. Users can select an image or a text block on an iPhone and paste it effortlessly on a MacBook. Microsoft is looking to replicate this seamless function between iPhones and Windows PCs. As reported by sources, Microsoft approached Apple through the European Union’s interoperability request framework for developers. This framework was initiated by Apple to align with the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
Back in March, Microsoft requested that Apple develop a method enabling apps to maintain persistent access to the clipboard for transferring content across connected devices. They also sought a solution that wouldn’t necessitate the app to be open or require repeated user permission for clipboard access.
In a recent response to Microsoft’s proposal, dated June 26, Apple confirmed plans to roll out a new functionality that will facilitate straightforward copy-pasting between an iPhone and a Windows PC. This feature will be powered by Apple’s AccessorySetupKit, which currently allows third-party smartwatches to receive notifications from iPhones. Users will need to grant one-time approval to share their clipboard with each connected device to utilize this feature.
Apple describes developing this capability as a “significant engineering effort,” aiming for completion by fall 2027. Following this, the feature will undergo beta testing prior to its anticipated release in the European Union. Users outside the EU will need to wait to see if this functionality is rolled out more broadly.
